Electra opened up the frame geometry, making a more ergonomic ride perfect for cruises to the beach, to the store, or to nowhere in particular. Electra Bicycle Company is a manufacturer of cruiser and city bikes founded in 1993 and headquartered in Vista, California. Electra bikes are known for their casual, relaxed riding style and colorful, eye-catching designs.
The company was founded by Benno Baenziger and Jeano Erforth, who were inspired to start Electra after a trip to Amsterdam where they saw the city's extensive network of bike paths and the popularity of biking as a means of transportation. They believed that they could create a similar biking culture in the United States by producing high-quality, stylish bikes that were accessible to a wide range of people.
Electra's first bike, the Townie, was released in 1993 and quickly became a hit thanks to its unique design, which allowed the rider to sit in an upright position while still being able to comfortably reach the pedals. The Townie also featured a comfortable saddle, balloon tires, and a simple, single-speed drivetrain, making it easy to ride and maintain.
Over the years, Electra has expanded its product line to include a variety of cruisers, city bikes, and children's bikes, all with a focus on comfort, style, and simplicity. In addition to the Townie, some of Electra's other popular models include the Beach Cruiser, the Amsterdam, and the Ticino.
In 2010, Electra introduced its "Flat Foot Technology," which allows the rider to plant both feet flat on the ground while seated, making it easier to start and stop the bike and increasing stability. This technology has been incorporated into many of Electra's bike models and has been well received by riders.
